The Tennessee River and adjoining lakes and tributaries have become a vital part of work and play in our area. In a city where local waterways play key roles in industry, commerce and recreation, emergency response on the water is being addressed. The Chattanooga Fire Department is the proud owner of its first fire-rescue boat, and the department mission statement can now be extended to the water. Some of you may have already seen Chattanooga’s newest emergency response vehicle during various water events or patrolling the shores of the river.
The 27-foot Vigilant Boston Whaler boasts twin Mercury 250 horsepower outboard engines, and is equipped with a 750 gpm (gallons per minute) fire pump. It has firefighting capability with a remote controlled bow monitor, and a standpipe where multiple fire hoses can be connected and utilized to fight fire. The fireboat has also been equipped with a dive door to aid in water rescues. It is also equipped with the latest marine navigation and electronic technology. The fire department was able to purchase this unique vessel with a Homeland Security grant. The department has developed an extensive training program, and now almost 40 firefighters have been trained to operate the fireboat, and assist in water emergencies.
The Chattanooga Fire Department is excited about the opportunity to now serve our citizens in a new way
